As you wind down through the pine and olive groves from the historic "ghost village" of Kayaköy, you are greeted by Gemile Bay—one of Fethiye’s most protected natural harbors and a massive open-air museum. This is more than just a place to lay your towel; it is a synthesis of culture and nature, featuring Gemile Island (St. Nicholas Island) just across the water, home to early Christian and Byzantine ruins, including churches, tunnels, and cisterns. As a First-Degree Natural Protected Area, this special region remains one of the most treasured sanctuaries for locals for picnics, camping, and boat excursions.

Distance: Approximately 9–13 km from Fethiye city center and just 6 km from historic Kayaköy.

How to Get There (By Road): Follow the signs from Fethiye to Kayaköy. Once you pass Kayaköy, follow the winding, fully asphalted 5-km road through the pine forests that leads you directly to the bay’s parking lot.

Public Transport: Take the Kayaköy minibus (dolmuş) from Fethiye center. During the summer season, you can find connecting shuttles or extended routes that take you directly to the shore of Gemiler Bay.

Beach & Facilities: Thanks to its sheltered location, the bay’s water is calm, warm, and glass-like. The shore and seabed are a mix of fine sand and pebbles. Along the coast, you will find areas to rent sunbeds and umbrellas, as well as showers, changing cabins, restrooms, and rustic, charming restaurants/kiosks serving fresh seafood and gözleme. Picnicking under the trees is also a popular pastime here.

Gemiler Island (St. Nicholas Island): Located just a few hundred metres across from the bay, you can reach the island in minutes via small motorboat shuttles from the beach or as part of a boat tour. The island is an archaeological site (Museum Pass is valid). You can walk through the mysterious 500-meter-long tunnel that leads to the cathedral ruins at the summit, and gaze upon the sunken harbor ruins visible through the clear water with the naked eye.

The most legendary experience in Gemiler is the sunset. Take a boat to Gemiler Island in the late afternoon and climb up to the church ruins at the island's highest point.
