Cold Water Bay
A Natural Oasis Chilled by Mountain Springs

Imagine jumping off a boat on a sweltering summer day in Fethiye, only to feel your entire body instantly chilled and revitalized within seconds. This is exactly what Soğuk Su Koyu delivers. Ice-cold freshwater, filtered through the mountains from the underground springs of the historic Kayaköy (Ghost Village), gushes directly into the sea at the bottom of this bay. With a layer of freezing freshwater floating atop the warm, salty Mediterranean seawater, this cove offers one of the most unforgettable—and shocking—swimming experiences in Fethiye.
Location & Transport Tips
-
Access: The primary and most enjoyable way to reach this bay is by sea. Due to its steep, rocky terrain, there is no road access for standard passenger vehicles.
-
Sea Routes: It is one of the most popular stops for daily boat tours departing from Ölüdeniz Belcekız Beach, usually visited right after Akvaryum Koyu.
-
Alternative Adventure Route (Lycian Way): There is a hidden land route known by very few. Starting from behind the ruins of Kayaköy and following the Lycian Way trail marked with red paint on stones, you can hike down to this bay in about 40–45 minutes. (Note: This hike can be demanding in the summer heat; make sure to bring plenty of water).
Facilities, Natural Structure & The "Shock" Experience
Soğuk Su Koyu is a natural harbor nestled between steep slopes, successfully avoiding signage, concrete-covered facilities, and modern development.
-
Facilities: There are no sunbeds, umbrellas, modern showers, or electricity-powered establishments within the bay itself. You might find a rustic, wooden shack serving gözleme (flatbread) or light snacks run by locals, but it may not be open every season. Your primary comfort relies on the boat you arrive on.
-
The Character of the Sea: The water is so clear that you can see the shimmering refraction (the halocline effect) where the freshwater meets the saltwater with the naked eye. As you swim deeper into the cove, toward the cave mouths where the spring emerges, the water temperature drops dramatically.
-
"Escapes Go" Swimming Tip: Boats usually anchor in the outer parts of the bay where the water is slightly warmer. To experience the true "Cold Water" effect, muster your courage and swim toward the innermost rocky corner and the cave entrance. It provides a fantastic detox effect for your body during the summer heat!
"Escapes Go" Traveler's Note
If you choose to hike down from Kayaköy instead of arriving by boat, sturdy walking shoes are a must. Additionally, since the shore is quite stony and rocky, don't forget to bring water shoes so you can exit the sea comfortably.
