The Strait Cove

A Hidden Aquarium at the End of the Forest Trail

If you are looking for a cove in Fethiye that is neither accessible by car nor crowded by the noise of boat tours, then Darboğaz Koyu is exactly what you seek. It takes its name from the narrow passage (strait) formed between the mainland and the charming small island right across from it. Because there is a constant, gentle current flowing toward the open sea, the water here is consistently among the cleanest, clearest, and freshest in Fethiye. Reached by walking through pine trees to the sound of birdsong, this cove is quite literally a reward for your adventurous spirit.

Location & Transport Tips

  • Access: There is no direct road access to this cove. Leaving your vehicle by the edge of the forest road and hiking down the trail is the unwritten rule of this place.

  • How to Get There: While driving from Fethiye center toward historic Kayaköy and Gemile Bay, you will see the famous spot on the winding road down to Gemile Beach where other cars are parked along the side. After parking your vehicle safely, you can reach the cove by taking a pleasant, gently sloping 15–20 minute walk along the Lycian Way trail—marked with red-and-white painted stones—that winds through the pine trees.

Facilities, Untouched Nature & Character of the Sea

As a protected area with untouched nature, Darboğaz Koyu has managed to remain completely isolated from the commercial world.

  • Facilities: There are absolutely no sunbeds, umbrellas, showers, restrooms, changing cabins, or electricity-powered establishments in the cove. This is nature in its purest form. You must carry your basic necessities, food, and—most importantly—your water in your own backpack.

  • The Character of the Sea: Due to its narrow strait structure, the sea is as flat as a sheet; however, a gentle, cool current constantly flows through from the depths. Thanks to this current, the water is crystal clear at all times and provides incredible refreshment during the summer heat. The shore and seabed consist entirely of large pebbles and stones.

  • "Escapes Go" Activity Tip: You absolutely must bring water shoes due to the stony terrain. Swimming with a snorkel in the "aquarium-clear" waters of the strait and swimming across to the small islet opposite to gaze back at the Fethiye Gulf is one of the greatest pleasures this place has to offer.

 "Escapes Go" Adventure Note

Although the hiking trail is not overly steep, walking in flip-flops or sandals can lead to injuries; therefore, sturdy sports shoes are a must. Most importantly, to keep this pristine paradise clean, packing out all the trash we bring in our backpacks is a respectful salute from an "Escapes Go" traveler to nature.
