Karaot Beach

A Hidden, Pristine Sanctuary Where Nature Reigns Supreme

Located in the Yanıklar region as you head from Fethiye toward Göcek, Karaot Beach is the top address in Fethiye for those who want to escape the chaos and concrete of the modern world and surrender themselves entirely to nature. As a protected, endemic nesting ground for Caretta Caretta sea turtles, it is one of the most untouched, pristine beaches in the region. With its fine sand, shallow and clear waters, and the charming reed-lake ecosystem just behind it, it offers a raw, pure, and "no-frills" Mediterranean experience.

Location & Transport Tips

  • Distance: Located approximately 15 km from Fethiye City Center, within the borders of Yanıklar Village.

  • Public Transport: You can take the "Yanıklar" minibuses (dolmuş) departing from Fethiye City Center and get off at the beach junction. From there, you will need to take a pleasant walk through nature to reach the shoreline.

Facilities, Services & Pricing

Since Karaot Beach is a protected conservation area, you will not find massive concrete structures or flashy, luxurious beach clubs here. It operates on a modest, "bohemian" concept that respects nature.

  • Entry & Public Areas: Entry to the beach is completely free. There are nature-friendly wooden showers, changing cabins, and restrooms available for your basic needs.

  • Sunbeds & Comfort: You can rent umbrellas and sunbeds for affordable prices from small spots run by the municipality or locals. However, the most authentic "Escapes Go" experience is to simply spread your towel on the fine sand, set up your folding chair, and listen to nothing but the cicadas and the sound of the waves.

  • Parking: Guests arriving by car can use the natural dirt areas just behind the beach for parking.

  • Food & Drinks: Instead of large luxury restaurants, you will find modest kiosks and small local businesses offering toasted sandwiches, gözleme, and hot/cold drinks. You are completely free to bring your own food and drinks; it’s the perfect spot for a scenic beach picnic in harmony with nature.

  • Accommodation & Camping: Because this is a Caretta Caretta nesting site, free-roaming wild camping on the beach or dunes is strictly prohibited. However, within the Yanıklar forest area, just a short walking distance away, there are wonderful private campsites and nature-friendly bungalow establishments that offer electricity, water, and restroom facilities.

Nighttime Rules & Vital Ecological Notes

Karaot Beach is one of the most sensitive ecosystems in Fethiye. Therefore, nighttime rules here differ significantly from standard beaches and are strictly enforced by nature conservation teams:

  • Beach Access Ban: After sunset (generally starting between 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM), it is strictly forbidden to enter, walk on, or sit on the beach to allow the turtles to come ashore to lay eggs or to let hatchlings reach the sea safely. After dark, the shoreline belongs entirely to its silent, natural inhabitants.

  • Lights, Fire, and Noise Restrictions: Even if you are in the areas behind the beach, it is strictly forbidden to use powerful flashlights pointed at the sea, use flash photography, light fires, or play loud music. Artificial light not only scares mothers attempting to come ashore but also confuses hatchlings, causing them to mistake it for the moon’s reflection on the sea and walk inland—where they sadly perish.

  • Daytime Usage: While sunbathing during the day, please take extra care not to approach the protective cages placed over nests, refrain from sticking umbrellas into the sand in these areas, and ensure that you leave absolutely no trash behind.

Escapes Go" Tip

If you are dreaming of a midnight swim or a beach party, you should redirect your route to Çalış Beach or the venues along the harbor (Kordon). Karaot is, and must remain, a sanctuary for the turtles at night.
