A Trail from the Pine Forest to the Cliffs
The route begins in the countryside between Kayaköy and Gemiler Bay, continuing first along a forest track and then onto a rougher coastal trail. The opening sections pass peacefully beneath pine trees, while the ground becomes steeper, rockier and more demanding as the monastery approaches.
Along the way, gaps in the forest reveal beautiful views of the sea. Near the final section, the trees begin to thin and the landscape opens towards the coastline, distant islands and the wide Mediterranean horizon.
Afkule is not a fully developed tourist trail. It remains a natural and relatively remote route, so visitors should walk carefully and leave enough daylight for the return journey.

How to Reach Afkule
Afkule cannot be reached directly by vehicle. The journey combines a drive towards Kayaköy and Gemiler with a final section completed on foot.
Via Kayaköy
From Fethiye, travel first to Kayaköy and continue towards the Kayaköy–Gemiler road. A forest track leads in the direction of Afkule, but the road eventually closes to vehicles and the walk begins.
Parts of the forest track may be rough and unsuitable for low vehicles, so drivers should proceed carefully and leave their car only in a safe location.
The Walking Trail
The final path is rocky, uneven and steep in places. Loose stones and rough natural steps can make the descent towards the monastery more challenging.
Walking time varies according to the starting point, fitness level and stops taken along the way. The return route includes uphill sections and may take slightly longer than the outward journey.
Guided Nature Walk
Visitors unfamiliar with the area or uncomfortable following natural trails may prefer joining a local guide. A guided walk can also provide additional context about the landscape and historical remains.

Wear Proper Footwear

There are no cafés, shops, fountains or visitor facilities at the site. Bring sufficient drinking water, particularly during warm weather.
Avoid the Midday Heat
Early morning or late afternoon is generally more comfortable during summer. Make sure you have enough time to return before darkness.
Keep Your Phone Charged
Afkule is a remote and unstaffed site. A fully charged phone and an offline map can be useful during the walk.
Stay Away from the Edges
High cliffs and unprotected drops surround parts of the monastery. Never walk backwards while taking photographs and maintain a safe distance from the edge.
Avoid Walking Alone
Because the route is natural and challenging in places, first-time visitors are safer walking with at least one companion.
