Lycian Power at the Mountain Summit and the Legend of Pegasus

Tlos Ancient City

Tlos Ancient City: The Ancient Sports Hub and Mythological Citadel

(One of the six major Lycian cities, Pegasus legend, continuous settlement history, Ottoman fortress)

Established to the east of Fethiye on the rugged western slopes of the Akdağlar mountain range, atop a massive rock formation completely dominating the Eşen Valley, Tlos is one of the six oldest and largest cities of the Lycian League possessing three voting rights. Mentioned even in Hittite written sources not just as a settlement but as the "Country of Dlawa" (a major province), Tlos is a rare center that enjoyed uninterrupted life from the Neolithic period to the Ottoman Empire, thanks to its geographically sheltered location. With rock palaces on its steep slopes, cisterns built over water sources, and a massive sports area at its foot, Tlos serves as both a military fortress and the Olympic sports base of Lycia.

Historical and Archaeological Character

  • Lycia’s Olympic Center (The Stadium): In ancient times, Tlos was renowned as the "sports city" of Lycia. The ruins of the massive stadium, located right at the foot of the acropolis hill, were the center of athletic, wrestling, and theatrical festivals held here centuries ago. The monumental Great Bath and Gymnasium complex right next to the stadium demonstrates the immense value the city placed on sports and social life.

  • The Birthplace of Mythology: Tomb of Bellerophon and Pegasus: As you climb the Tlos Acropolis among the temple tombs carved into the rock, you will find one of the most important masterpieces in world mythological history. This is the monumental tomb belonging to the mythological hero Bellerophon, where the battle between the winged sacred horse Pegasus and the three-headed monster Chimera (the legend of the Eternal Fires) is carved into stone. It stands as one of the most elite examples of Lycian stonemasonry in the world.

  • Rock Tombs and Ingenious Cisterns at the Acropolis Foot: The greatest visual wealth making Tlos unique is the house- and temple-type rock tombs carved into the steep rock face of the acropolis like a honeycomb. Right beneath the layers of these tombs, on the slopes where ice-cold waters from the Akdağlar roar down, lie massive water cisterns and channels built by ancient engineers. By controlling the wild mountain river waters with this cistern system, the Lycians both met the city's water needs and opened the valley below to agriculture.

  • The Temple of Kronos and the Three-Story Theater: Located at one of the highest points of the city is a rare temple dedicated to Kronos, the god of time (the Sky God). Directly opposite is the massive ancient theater, featuring a three-story stage building—an architectural masterpiece perfectly positioned against the mountain breeze.

  • Ottoman Traces (The Castle of Kanlı Ali Ağa): The most extraordinary historical layer that sets Tlos apart from other ancient cities is the 18th-century Ottoman-era Castle of Kanlı Ali Ağa, perched at the very top of the Acropolis. A local feudal lord of the region added history upon history by building his own citadel directly on top of the ancient Lycian fortress walls.

"Escapes Go" Historical Note.

  • Tlos is not merely a classical Roman or Hellenistic city. Archaeological excavations in the Girmeler Cave, located in the lower layers of the city area, have unearthed hand tools and human traces dating back to 8000 BC. This grants Tlos the title of the oldest and longest continuously inhabited settlement (spanning approximately 10,000 years) across the entire Lycian geography.

Location and Transportation Tips (The Sea Route Ritual)

  • Location: Situated approximately 42 km from Fethiye city center, within the Yaka (Yakaköy) neighborhood of the Seydikemer district. It sits along the same route as the famous Saklıkent Canyon.

  • Transportation by Private Vehicle: While traveling on the Fethiye-Antalya highway in the direction of Saklıkent, turn east (toward the mountains) at the Güneşli village junction. Following the well-paved asphalt road will bring you comfortably to the parking area right at the entrance of the ancient city.

  • Public Transportation: The Seydikemer - Tlos - Yaka Köyü shuttle buses (dolmuş), which depart regularly from the Fethiye Central Bus Terminal throughout the year, will drop you off right in front of the ancient city and its famous Acropolis.
