The World-Famous Lycian Way

Following History and Views

After exploring Fethiye’s cool canyons and hidden waterfalls, we are now setting our route toward a true global legend, a trail that defies time: The historic Lycian Way.

Stretching over 500 kilometers from Fethiye’s Hisarönü region all the way to Antalya, this ancient route is at the top of every adventure seeker's bucket list. If you are ready to follow the footsteps of the thousands-year-old "Land of Light" (Lycia), lace up your boots—we are embarking on a long journey toward the steepest slopes of the Mediterranean!

Walking Through a Time Tunnel: The Perfect Harmony of History and Nature

What sets the Lycian Way apart from an ordinary trekking route is the thousands-year-old ancient city ruins you encounter at every turn. In a single day, you can breathe in the scent of nature while passing by sarcophagi, theaters, and monumental gates dating back to the Roman, Byzantine, and Lycian eras.

Along the trail, you will climb narrow paths where even goats struggle to walk, rest in the shade of century-old olive trees, and discover hidden coves that no human foot has touched, visible only from above.

The Fethiye Stage: The World’s Most Scenic Starting Point

The greatest advantage of the Lycian Way is that you don't have to walk the entire route at once. The first stages within Fethiye, which serve as the beginning of the journey, are the most iconic and visually rich sections of the entire trail:

  • Ölüdeniz from a Bird's-Eye View: Shortly after leaving the symbolic Lycian Way start gate in Hisarönü, you begin your ascent. As you look back, you’ll see the world-famous view of Ölüdeniz and Kumburnu from a height you’ve never experienced before—almost like a paraglider.

  • The Cliffs of Butterfly Valley and Kabak Bay: As the route leads you toward the villages of Faralya and Kabak, you get the chance to photograph the mystical depths of Butterfly Valley from the edge of massive cliffs. Walking on the paths overlooking Kabak Bay at sunset is a visual feast you will never forget.

Guide: Golden Rules for a Comfortable and Safe Exploration

The Lycian Way is as serious as it is spectacular, requiring respect for nature and proper preparation. Before you set off, keep these points in mind:

  • Follow the Red-White Stripes: The red-white paint marks you will see on rocks and trees along the way (the Grande Randonnée system) are your compass. If you don't see these lines for a while, you are off the trail—return to the last mark you saw.

  • Ankle-Supporting Trekking Boots are Essential: The Lycian Way consists of hard, rocky, and uneven terrain. Attempting this in flat sneakers or sandals is an invitation for an ankle injury. Wear proper trekking boots with stiff, lugged soles that support your ankles.

  • Water and Energy Management: Especially in summer and spring, climbing under the Mediterranean sun causes significant water loss. Always carry slightly more water than you think you need, and pack snacks like nuts, dates, or energy bars to balance your blood sugar.

  • Use Offline Maps: Cellular service may be spotty in some canyons and on mountain slopes. Before starting your hike, be sure to download offline-capable map apps (like Wikiloc or Maps.me) that show the route.
