Treasures of Antiquity

Fethiye Archaeology Museum

Fethiye Archaeology Museum: The Treasure Chest of Lycia (UNESCO-listed inscriptions, chronological history, ancient artifacts, Lycian cultural heritage)

Every step you take in and around Fethiye brings you face-to-face with magnificent ancient cities (Tlos, Kadyanda, Letoon, Kaunos, Pınara). The most select, precious, and fragile portable artifacts from these sites are housed in this humble yet treasure-filled museum in the city center. Offering a seamless chronological flow—from the Early Bronze Age in 3000 BC through the Lycian, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods, all the way to the Ottoman era—the Fethiye Archaeology Museum is the essential first stop to understanding the region's cultural codes and religious beliefs. It is not merely a space where statues are exhibited; it is a "library of memory" housing one of the greatest linguistic discoveries in world history.

Historical and Archaeological Character.

  • A Star of World Archaeology: The Trilingual Inscription: The most important and priceless artifact in the museum is the stele (upright stone slab) dating back to 358 BC, found in the sacred area of the Ancient City of Letoon. The same text is inscribed on this stone in three different languages: Lycian, Greek, and Aramaic. Much like the Rosetta Stone that cracked the code of Egyptian hieroglyphs, this "Trilingual Inscription" served as the key that finally allowed the world to decipher the mysterious ancient Lycian language, its grammar, and its vocabulary.

  • Sarcophagi and Sculpture Culture: The Roman and Lycian-era sarcophagi exhibited in the museum’s indoor halls and spacious open-air garden shed light on the burial rituals of antiquity. The fine marble craftsmanship seen in the statues of Roman emperors and gods—particularly those unearthed from the Ancient City of Tlos—is the most concrete evidence of the region’s artistic and aesthetic sophistication during that era.

  • The Symbols of Lycia: The centuries-old coins, jewelry, and votive stelae in the museum reveal the economic independence of the Lycian League—which minted its own currency—and the diverse religious rituals that varied from home to home and region to region.

"Escapes Go" Historical Note.

  • As you walk through the museum garden, you will notice "inscriptions" on many of the massive stone blocks and column capitals. The Lycians made it a tradition to carve their social rules, royal decrees, border agreements, and even tomb protection laws (and the curses associated with them) into stone. In this sense, the museum is not just a visual feast, but a collection of massive "stone letters" sent from centuries ago to the present day.
