As the highest-altitude archaeological site in Fethiye, Cadianda (known in the Lycian language as Kadavanti) is a true mountain fortress, established on a rugged hill at an elevation of approximately 400 meters above sea level (often reaching higher peaks in its immediate surroundings). Although this city, whose history dates back to the 5th century BC, joined the Lycian League later than other major cities, it achieved immense wealth due to its strategic location. In Cadianda, where giant pine trees sprout from among ancient stones, the site is not merely a military refuge but a deeply rooted center of sports and culture that nurtured Lycia’s award-winning athletes.

Lycia’s Base of Champions (Stadium): The most significant feature that made Cadianda famous in the ancient world is that, despite being a mountain city, it hosted a massive stadium at its summit. Excavations here have uncovered centuries-old stone inscriptions bearing the names of Kadyandan athletes who won ancient sporting competitions. The city was one of the most prestigious stops for the Olympic-style games held throughout the Lycian League.

Rugged Mountain Walls and Acropolis: The massive cyclopean walls (built with enormous blocks without mortar) surrounding the city demonstrate just how difficult this mountain-top settlement was to conquer. The monumental gate on the southern slope is one of the most magnificent examples of Lycian military architecture.

The Theater Above the Clouds: The ancient theater, cleverly nestled into the steep incline of the southern slope, may not be huge, but its view is nothing short of breathtaking. As you sit on the spectator steps, a panoramic view of the Fethiye Gulf and the Eşen Valley unfolds beneath your feet through the pine trees.

Treasures and Warrior Sarcophagi: As you walk the pine-needle-covered paths of the city, you will encounter Lycian sarcophagi that draw attention with their centuries-old relief carvings of battle scenes. The house-type rock tombs located in the necropolis area to the south, in particular, showcase the hard and noble stonemasonry of this mountainous region.

Kadyanda is the only ancient city in the Fethiye region with a "natural canopy." Centuries-old plane trees and massive pine forests cover the site so densely that even in the scorching heat of August, you are greeted by a cool, refreshing plateau breeze upon arrival. It is a mesmerizing hiking route where you can observe the centuries-long secret "war" and friendship between the stones and the tree roots.
Location and Transportation Tips (The Sea Route Ritual)

Location: Situated approximately 24 km from Fethiye city center, it lies on a mountain summit just above the village of Yeşilüzümlü (Üzümlü), known for its famous dastar (hand-woven fabric) and vineyards.

Transportation by Private Vehicle: Follow the asphalt road from Fethiye city center toward Üzümlü. Once you reach the Üzümlü square, follow the signs for "Kadyanda." You can easily reach the parking area at the entrance of the ancient city via a winding but fully paved and comfortable 7-8 kilometer pine forest road.

Public Transportation: There are regular shuttle buses (dolmuş) from Fethiye center to Üzümlü Village. However, there is no public transport from the village center up to the ancient city at the top of the mountain. Unless you are planning a professional trekking route from the village, you must use a private vehicle, taxi, or a private tour to reach the summit.
